Wooden Bodhisattva Masks
Jodoji Temple possesses 27 Bodhisattva masks made by master Buddha sculptor Kaikei, 25 of which have been designated as Important Cultural Properties.
These masks were apparently used in acting out raigoe, a rite in which bodhisattva would come from the Pure Land to greet the dead departing
this world.
They are distinctive for their carved eyebrows, which are rare features on masks such as these.
