Haiden, Hachiman Shrine
Important Cultural Property
Important Cultural Property
Allow me to introduce the Haiden (Worship Hall) of Hachiman Shrine, a National Important Cultural Property.
This Haiden is a building in which visitors can worship. It is a reproduction built in the exact same manner as the original was in 1239.
The building is wide, with a path to the Honden (main hall) running through the center.
The open ceiling is the same as that of Jododo Hall, thus reflecting the daibutsuyo architectural style of Chogen.
The gate-like structure in front of the Haiden is called a torii, and it represents the boundary between the world of the shrine and the outside world.
The statues standing between the torii and the Haiden are called komainu.
These mythical guard beasts excise evil and protect the shrine.
