Jododo Hall, Jodoji Temple
National Treasure
National Treasure
Jododo Temple Hall was completed in 1197 by Saint Chogen, who rose to fame after rebuilding Todaiji Temple.
To build Jododo Hall, I used daibutsuyo-style architecture, which I learned from China’s Song Dynasty.
The uncovered ceiling is a feature of the style that makes the temple feel more spacious.
The vermillion-painted ceiling beams against a pure white base color is a style called kesho-yaneura and resembles the contrasting colors of traditional Japanese makeup.
Only two daibutsuyo structures remain in Japan: the Nandaimon Gate of Todaiji Temple and Jododo Hall at Jodaiji Temple.
Inside, a wooden Amitabha statue carved by famed Buddha sculptor Kaikei is enshrined. This statue, like Jododo itself, is a National Treasure.
